The cast and producers of Hairspray Live! spoke with the Television Critics Association about this week’s big production. With her big break, she ends up leading the charge to integrate black and white performers, and helps her mother Edna come out of her shell. It’s the story of a high school girl in Baltimore who auditions for a local dance show in the early 1960s. Hairspray began as a 1988 John Waters movie, then a Tony Award–winning Broadway show and a hit 2007 movie adaptation of the musical. Still, months and months of rehearsals and preparation go into show night.
That’s why live television is exciting and these network musicals - like The Wiz, Grease, and Sound of Music - are bringing it back. HBO Max subscribers, meanwhile, will be treated to Westworld, the Emmy-winning drama returning for its fourth season, as well as Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, among many others. Fellow Disney-owned streamer Hulu will be stocked with titles like the Emma Thompson-starring comedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and FX's The Old Man, as well as the Season 2 premiere of the hit series Only Murders In the Building and the final season of Love, Victor. Marvel, the streamer also set to premiere Baymax!, a follow-up to Big Hero 6. Over on Disney+, subscribers will be treated to new episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the debut of Marvel Studios' latest project, Mrs. June will also bring two massive titles back to the library – Peaky Blinders Season 6 and The Umbrella Academy Season 3. In June, the streamer is putting extra emphasis on its comedy specials, with titles featuring everyone from David Letterman to Snoop Dogg, and a comedy tribute to the late Bob Saget also on the list. Kicking things off will be a slate of new additions arriving to Netflix.
